Online Community Manager
Location: New York City (Preferred)
The Solutions Journalism Network (SJN) is an independent, non-profit organization that works to spread the practice of solutions journalism: rigorous reporting about how people are responding to social problems. Over 2,500 people have joined our online community, the Hub; and more than 6,000 have been exposed to our workshops, toolkits, and other curricula. Since our inception in 2013, we have trained 75+ news outlets around the U.S. and the world–including BBC, Seattle Times, Christian Science Monitor, myriad NPR affiliates, PBS NewsHour, and many more.
SJN is rapidly building out its strategy to connect, support, and celebrate journalists doing solutions journalism. We are looking for an entrepreneurial and experienced individual who will help develop and expand our online community. The manager will help us discern the powerful “connect” mechanisms for network members: How can journalists living on opposite sides of the country (or world) share learning, make introductions to relevant contacts, or co-report a solutions journalism story? What existing networks can we leverage to facilitate collaboration and increase impact? S/he will curate conversations online through twitter chats, Facebook groups, and our website, distilling and disseminating learning across the larger network. Additional tasks may include helping to co-design an online mentor program.
This position is half-time, with the possibility of it growing into a full-time position.
–Entrepreneurial, experimental, & scientific approach to work
–3–5 years experience working in journalism, audience engagement, and/or community building
–Simultaneously self-reliant and a huge team player, with a remarkably positive attitude and comfort with ambiguity/uncertainty
–Comfortable synthesizing conversations with multiple players into cohesive narratives, genuinely passionate about starting and curating conversations among journalists about themes from the supremely tactical to broader theoretical questions
–Must be able to analyze numbers and trends quickly — and to translate those metrics into strategy
–Interest in the mission of SJN
