Solutions Journalism University Hubs
Regional hubs are ensuring that journalism focused on responses to problems is integrated into the teaching, research and service of leading journalism programs.
The university hubs program was launched in 2022 with the aim of creating beacons to ensure that journalism focused on responses to problems is integrated into the teaching, research and service of leading journalism schools. The hubs are:
- Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication
- Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications
- Stony Brook University’s School of Communication and Journalism
- University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication
- Pepperdine University
As hubs, the five journalism programs are building and convening a national conversation about the importance of rigorous reporting on what is working as well as problems in bringing communities together to have a meaningful impact on the issues and challenges facing society.
Educational institutions are incubators of creativity, innovation and research, and the hubs are well equipped to help transform journalism so that all people have access to news that is inclusive and helps them envision and build a more equitable and sustainable world.
The following outstanding journalism educators direct the future of the hubs:
- Rebecca Blatt, Cronkite’s senior associate dean and professor of practice
- Amanda Bright, co-director of Grady’s Solutions Journalism Hub, an academic professional at Grady and director of the Journalism Innovation Lab
- Kyser Lough, also a co-director at Grady and an assistant professor specializing in visual journalism
- Ralitsa Vassileva, also a co-director at Grady and a lecturer in broadcast news
- Deborah D. Douglas, Medill’s director of the Midwest Solutions Journalism Hub and a senior lecturer
- Laura Lindenfeld, dean of the School of Communication and Journalism at Stony Brook and executive director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science
- Elizabeth Smith, associate professor of communication and director of Pepperdine Graphic Media within the Seaver College of Liberal Arts and president of the Associated College Press
- Theresa de los Santos, associate professor of communication and adviser to “NewsWaves,” Pepperdine’s broadcast TV news show, also housed within the Seaver College of Liberal Arts
