Data Sources on Economic Mobility
Nationally, there are many datasets available about income, poverty, and economic mobility provided by government agencies. These include:
- U.S. Census Bureau Data on Income and Poverty, which breaks down census information by state, population, and various demographics.
- The American Community Survey, a monthly survey that asks a sample set of Americans questions not found on the Census, including on topics like employment and transportation.
- U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tracks the Consumer Price Index, unemployment, and more economic indicators that can be examined by region.
On a state or city level availability of data varies, but many have opted for open data programs that create more accountability and access. These can be found at Data.Gov.
