The Impact of Solutions Journalism on Students

Recently, we announced the next cohort of newsrooms for the Student Media Challenge. They will continue where last year’s left off, covering youth mental health with a solutions focus. When this was first conceived, we bet that student journalists covering issues they and their peers faced would be a powerful experience, one that would hopefully improve the journalists’ relationship to news and potentially reframe the issue around campus. The first cohort proved that was a good bet, exceeding even those lofty expectations. Recently, our own Michael Davis spoke to students and staff from three of those newsrooms. Their personal reflections attest to the impact of their work and the value to young people of going beyond the problem.
