Katherine Stanley Obando
Katherine is a journalist based in San José, Costa Rica, specializing in in-depth reporting on mental health, education, human rights, and civil society initiatives. As the co-founder and editor of El Colectivo 506, the first nationwide solutions journalism organization in Central America, she has co-created and edited more than 30 month-long editions of in-depth journalism about responses to Costa Rica's problems. Alongside her co-founder Mónica Quesada, she is also active as a trainer and convener of journalists in her country and beyond; together, they launched the Latin American Solutions Journalism Fund in 2024 to support solutions journalism training and reporting in the region. Katherine is the English Editor for international nonprofit SembraMedia, the former editor-in-chief of The Tico Times in San José, and an experienced nonprofit leader and coach with extensive grant development, research, fundraising and project management experience. Her journalism has garnered recognitions and fellowships from the Dart Center at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Internews, and the Carter Center, among others. Her book “Love in Translation: Letters to My Costa Rican Daughter” was published in 2016.
